The Helicopter

1932

Igor Sikorsky

Sikorsky's Direct Lift Amphibian Type Aircraft looks like a cross between an airplane, a boat and today's modern helicopter.

The dual horizontal engines provided forward thrust and compensated for the torque resulting from the main lift propeller. The craft was equipped to alight on land and water.

Sikorsky was the founder of the Sikorsky Helicopter company which today is part of United Technologies Inc.
